About Dr. Michael Beckenstein
Board-certified by both the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Michael Beckenstein operates a private practice in Birmingham offering plastic surgery patients a range of surgical procedures for the body, breasts, and face. He also offers non-surgical skin care treatments and products for men and women who are looking for a minimally-invasive way to rejuvenate their appearance.
Dr. Beckenstein's goal is to apply his training and experience to every procedure he performs in order to deliver satisfying results. He and his staff are committed to ensuring each patient's safety and comfort throughout the entire cosmetic surgery experience. Dr. Beckenstein serves patients from Birmingham and the entire southeast, including Montgomery, Hoover, Huntsville, Atlanta, Mobile, and Nashville.
Dr. Beckenstein's Training and Experience
Birmingham plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Beckenstein shares his educational background and professional experience with his patients so that they can feel comfortable choosing him for their plastic surgery procedure. After completing his undergraduate work at Union College in New York, Dr. Beckenstein went on to receive his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School, where he was admitted to the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. He completed his internship and a residency in general surgery at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in New Jersey before moving to Cleveland for his residency in plastic surgery at Case Western Reserve University. While at Case Western, he also completed a 6-month research fellowship.
While most plastic surgeons transition to practice soon after completing their residencies, Dr. Beckenstein chose to continue his training before founding his Birmingham plastic surgery practice. He completed 3 fellowships, beginning with a fellowship in breast reconstruction with Dr. Carl Hartrampf, the developer of the TRAM flap, in Atlanta. He also completed a fellowship in aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery, under Dr. Scott Spear, at Georgetown University Medical Center before coming to Birmingham for a fellowship in breast reconstruction and aesthetic surgery being trained by highly-recognized plastic surgeons who also taught Dr. Beckenstein a great deal about liposuction and facial plastic surgery techniques. To date, no other plastic surgeon has completed this level of training.
Michael S. Beckenstein, M.D. performs over 600 procedures each year including over 400 breast reductions, lifts, augmentation, and reconstruction procedures. This extensive experience enabled him to develop a level of expertise with these procedures and allows him to deliver the excellent level of care he demands for his patients. Dr. Beckenstein continues to conduct research and publish articles and textbook chapters to continue the progression of his field.
Breast Enhancement in Birmingham
The extensive training that Dr. Beckenstein received through the 3 fellowships he completed and his extensive experience makes him well-qualified to perform breast enhancement procedures. He offers the following types of breast surgeries for his Birmingham plastic surgery patients:
- Breast Augmentation
- Breast Reduction
- Breast Lift
- Breast Reconstruction
Breast augmentation is especially popular among Dr. Beckenstein's patients. Breast enlargement can help a woman achieve a fuller, more feminine breast appearance. The procedure also can correct breast asymmetry, and it can be combined with a breast lift procedure to restore breast fullness lost as a result of pregnancy or aging. Dr. Beckenstein offers a number of different implant options, including saline and silicone gel implants, and he helps each of his patients choose the implant, placement technique, and incision technique that will produce very natural-looking results.
Body Sculpting from a Birmingham Plastic Surgeon
In addition to breast enhancement procedures, Dr. Beckenstein offers liposuction and tummy tucks to help you sculpt and tone your body. Many men and women choose liposuction because it can be used to eliminate stubborn fat deposits from virtually any area of the body. Some of the most popular liposuction target sites include the waist, back, arms, abdomen, thighs, and even under the chin. Tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a good option for patients who have excess skin, loose muscles, and fatty tissue around the abdominal area. During a tummy tuck, excess skin is removed from the stomach area and the abdominal muscles are tightened to create a more defined and toned midsection. Sometimes Dr. Beckenstein's patients opt to combine a tummy tuck with liposuction to achieve a more complete mid-body makeover.
Dr. Beckenstein: A Leader in the Fight against Breast Cancer
Dr. Beckenstein's commitment to his patients extends beyond his role as a Birmingham plastic surgeon and into his community through his efforts to raise breast cancer awareness. He recently received the BMW Ultimate Drive Local Hero award in recognition of his work with the Breast Surgery Center of Alabama. Dr. Beckenstein founded and continues to operate the Center in conjunction with his practice in order to help women fighting breast cancer get the care, physical therapy, and emotional support they need. Dr. Beckenstein also received the Life Inspiration Award from the American Cancer Society for the compassionate care he provides his patients. He is proud to be able to use his experience as a plastic surgeon to act as a local leader in the fight against breast cancer.
